What is the principle behind a transformer?

A transformer is a component that utilizes the mutual inductance properties of coils and is used in virtually all electronic products. While its operating principle is simple, the winding process varies depending on the specific application (purpose). The primary functions of a transformer include: voltage conversion; impedance transformation; isolation; and voltage regulation (in the case of magnetically saturated transformers). It consists of a primary coil (with n1 turns) and a secondary coil (with n2 turns) wound around a core. Common core shapes include E-shaped and C-shaped.

A transformer is a device that utilizes the principle of electromagnetic induction to alter alternating current (AC) voltage. Its main components are the primary winding, secondary winding, and core (magnetic core). In electrical equipment and wireless circuits, transformers are commonly used for voltage step-up or step-down, impedance matching, and safety isolation. In a transformer, the winding connected to the power source receives AC power and is called the primary winding; the winding connected to the load which delivers AC power to the load, is called the secondary winding. The voltage vectors U1 and U2, current vectors I1 and I2, electromotive force vectors E1 and E2, and turns N1 and N2 of the primary and secondary windings, respectively, are key parameters. The vector of the magnetic flux linking the primary and secondary windings is φm, which is referred to as the main magnetic flux.

The main components of a transformer include:

(1) Core: Includes the iron core, windings, insulation components, and leads.

(2) Voltage regulation device: Also known as a tap changer, which is classified into no-load voltage regulation and on-load voltage regulation.

(3) Oil tank and cooling system.

(4) Protection devices: Includes the oil reservoir, safety vent, moisture absorber, gas relay, oil purifier, and temperature measurement devices.

(5) Insulating Bushings
